joyce sewing

There is extensive hand sewing in all my fiberworks. Most of it is invisible, on the back.

sketch I begin most designs by doodling and drawing in my design notebook.
computer drawing Then I scan my sketch and use it to create a computer drawing that is based on it.
drawing on wall I can scan a photo of the client's space and place the computer drawing on the photo to show placement and scale.
drawing with grid I draw a grid over the design in order to enlarge the design to a full-scale pattern.
pattern on wall The next step is to draw a full-scale pattern on brown kraft paper.
nylon on wall Using the paper patterns, I cut the foundation pieces from cordura nylon.
cutting fabric I cut narrow strips of colored fabric to sew to the background.
piece started All my fabric strips are arranged on a drying rack according to color and value so I can select them easily.
cut strips I cut strips to the correct length, using the foundation piece as a guide.
sew strips Then they are sewn in sequence to the foundation.
making checkerboard For the checkerboard, all my colors are laid out on the table.
point of departure Here's the completed piece, "Point of Departure", ready to install.
